Headway User Guide

Tap the Headway button on the iPhone home screen to start Headway.

Headway always starts by displaying the 'Direction' view which shows the direction to the most recently targetted location (from the current location). The different functions of Headway are accessed by tapping the items in the bar at the bottom of the screen. Each of these functions are described below.

Direction

The direction view displays an arrow to show the direction to from the current location to the target location where possible. It also indicates accuracy of the compass reading, when appropriate (note that this accuracy does not include possible variations in direction due to the accuracy of the location detection).

In addition to these symbols, the title and subtitle of the target location are displayed at the bottom of the screen. The subtitle is set automatically to the coordinates, and the title is automatically set to the address or locality (as much as is available) when a target is created. The title and subtitle of a target can be changed after it has been bookmarked (see 'Bookmarks', below).

The heading and distance to the target location from the current location are displayed at the top of the screen (when available, and accurate enough to be useful).

Other symbols can be displayed in this view instead of the usual arrow. Each of the symbols used in the direction view is described below.

Direction

Still

The direction from the current location to the target location is indicated by the direction the arrow is pointing. The accuracy of the compass reading is within 30°.

Swinging

The direction from the current location to the target location is indicated by the direction the arrow is pointing. The accuracy of the compass reading is indicated by the swing of the arrow, so that the actual direction is somewhere between the two extremes of the swinging.

Rotating

The direction cannot be determined because the compass reading is invalid or not available. This can occur when there is too much magnetic interference for the compass to work correctly. This is often accompanied by the system pop up message explaining how to calibrate the compass.

Here

The target location is here, or close to it.

This symbol is displayed if the distance from the current location to the target location is determined to be less than 10 metres, with an accuracy of less than 10 metres (so the actual distance is less than 20 metres).

Here or Near

The target location is within the range of accuracy reading for the current location, so direction cannot be certain enough to be useful.

This symbol is displayed if the distance from the current location to the target location is determined to be less than the accuracy range. This distance/accuracy combination makes the direction indication too innacurrate to be useful.

To get a direction reading, move outside where the iPhone has a clear view of a large area of sky in order to get an accurate location reading from satellites. Placing the iPhone near a window can sometimes help.

Near

The direction to the target location from the current location is indicated by the arrowhead, but the target location is near, relative to the available accuracy of the current location, so the accuracy of the accuracy of the direction is less reliable.

This symbol is displayed if the distance from the current location to the target location is determined to be less than two times the accuracy range, but not withing the accuracy range. This distance/accuracy combination makes the direction indication less acurrate.

To get a more accurate direction reading, move outside where the iPhone has a clear view of a large area of sky in order to get an accurate location reading from satellites. Placing the iPhone near a window can sometimes help.

Map

The map view shows the current location (blue blob) and the target location (red pin) on a world map. Each time it is displayed, it automatically pans and zooms to show both the current and target locations, if possible.

To view details of the target location (eg, address or locality), tap the red pin.

To change the target location, drag the red pin to a new location. If necessary, pinch the map to zoom in/out and drag to pan, to show areas off screen, or more accurately.

Use the map typ buttons at the top left to change the map view to either 'map', 'satellite' or 'hybrid'.

Target Here

To target the current location, tap the 'Target Here' item.

Bookmarks

This table is for using and managing bookmarked target locations.

Tap a bookmark to target that bookmarked location.

To add a bookmark, tap the 'Add Here' or 'Add Target' button to bookmark the current location or the target location, respectively.

Tap the 'Edit' button to delete or rearrange bookmarks.

Tap the blue disclosure button next to a bookmark to view or change it's title, subtitle or coordinates.

Recents

Each time the target location is changed, the target is added to the recents table. The last 10 recent targets are automatically retained.

Tap a recent target to select it, then tap the target button to target that location again (if only one recent location is selected).

Tap one or more recent targets to select those targets, then tap the bookmark button to add those targets to the bookmarks.

Tap a selected recent target again to deselect it.
