Tap the Layers Library button on the Main Map View to see the Layers Library

The Layers Library is divided into two sections which contain two types of items:

  • Network Services – these are online services and these layers will only work when a network connection is available
  • Local Data Sources – these are offline data sources stored on the device and can be used when there is no network connection

View Layers within a Library Item

Items of types that can contain multiple layers have a disclosure chevron to the right of their names (>).

  • Tap an item with a disclosure chevron (>) to display its available layers
    • For online services such as WMTS, this will query the online service to determine which layers are available

Add a Library Layer to the Map

  • Tap the add-to-map button to the right of a layer name to add that layer to the map

For a layer within a service/source with multiple layers, tap on the service/source item first, to see its layers.

Add Existing Data Source to the Library from Other Devices or Other Apps

There are several ways to add existing data to Bit Map’s Layers Library.  In many cases, you can tap on the item in the app (eg, in Mail) and use the share/action button and then, in the share panel that appears, choose ‘Bit Map’.

Another common way to add data sources to Bit Map is using the ‘Files’ App, as follows:

  • Add the data source to the ‘Files’ app (eg, copy the data source to iCloud drive, or one of the other data folder types that the ‘Files’ app supports – on the same or another device – and wait for it to sync to the Bit Map device)
  • In the ‘Files’ app, navigate to the location where the data store is (eg, to the iCloud drive section)
  • Tap the menu button (top-right button that looks like a circle with three dots)
  • Tap ‘Select’
  • Tap the data store to select it
  • Tap the folder button (bottom toolbar)
  • Select the ‘On My [iPhone|iPad]’ item to view its contents (if it is not already expanded)
  • Select the ‘Bit Map’ folder
  • Tap ‘Copy’ (top toolbar)

Switch back to Bit Map, and navigate back to the Layers Library.  The added data source should appear in the ‘Local Data Sources’ section.

Add Online Map Service

  • Tap ‘+’ (bottom toolbar)
  • Tap ‘Add Online Layer Service’
  • Enter the URL of the online service
    • To view information about supported service types and URL templates, tap ‘URL Help’ (or ‘?’ back on the main Library view)
  • Tap ‘Add Online Service’
    • The service will be added to the Library, if no errors were found with it

Create New Empty Offline Data Store

  • Tap ‘+’ (bottom toolbar)
  • Tap ‘Create Empty Offline Data Store’
  • Enter the name of the new data store
    • The new data store will be added to the Library

Paste Copied Item into the Library

  • Tap the Paste button (bottom toolbar)

  • If a data source or layer service has been copied, it will be pasted to the Library (usually with a number appended to avoid duplicate name)
    • This can be useful to duplicate a service/source

Edit Items

Rename Item

  • Tap ‘Edit’ (bottom toolbar)
  • Tap the item to be renamed
  • Enter the new name
  • Tap ‘OK’

Re-order Items

Only network services can be re-ordered.  Local data stores are always listed sorted by name.

  • Tap ‘Edit’ (bottom toolbar)
  • Drag and drop network service items into the desired order using the handle (3 horizontal lines) to the right of each item
  • Tap ‘Done’ (bottom toolbar)

Share or Copy a Library Item

  • Tap the item to view its content
  • Tap the share/action button (bottom toolbar)

  • Tap ‘Share’ to send the item to another person or device; or
  • Tap ‘Copy’ to copy the item to the pasteboard
    • This can then be pasted into the Library using the Library’s ‘+’ button (see above) to duplicate the item

Manage Data in Local (Offline) Data Sources

Managing data includes adding layers to data sources, adding fields (attributes) to layers, and entering data into fields.

This is for more advanced users and is described on a dedicated page at:  Data Management
